Tesla’s place in Infinite Hand honors the imagination that can picture a different system before others can see how it might work. That imagination needs experiment, collaborators, resources, and limits. We take inspiration from invention while asking how a promising idea becomes something people can use and sustain.

01 · Context
Meet the story.
Nikola Tesla’s work contributed to practical alternating-current power systems, including the induction motor and polyphase technologies developed in the late 1880s. The Tesla Science Center distinguishes those contributions from the invention of alternating current itself, which had an earlier history. His achievement belongs within a wider history of electrical research and engineering.
At Wardenclyffe on Long Island, construction began in 1901 on a laboratory and tower intended for an ambitious system of wireless communication and power transmission. The project did not fulfill that ambition. The preserved site connects the history of a far-reaching proposal with the material realities of buildings, equipment, financing, and incomplete work.

Give a bold idea a testable form
Imagination becomes easier to share when someone can examine a drawing, model, or experiment. State what you expect to happen and what result would make you reconsider. A small test can protect both the idea and the people investing their effort in it.
Make the supporting work visible
An invention depends on tools, prior knowledge, maintenance, money, and the labor of other people. Name those contributions. Credit and practical support help a community continue creating after attention has moved away from its most celebrated member.
Ask who the system serves
Technical possibility does not settle the purpose of a project. Consider who gains access, who maintains it, and who bears its costs or failures. A design grows more useful when the people expected to live with it can shape the decisions.
03 · A question to keep open
Leave room for complexity.
Tesla is often surrounded by stories of the isolated genius whose every proposal was suppressed or misunderstood. That mythology can obscure both real achievement and real uncertainty. Infinite Hand’s reflection leaves room for failed experiments, contested claims, and collaborative history. Admiring a person’s imagination does not require treating an unfinished vision as a demonstrated technology.
04 · Bring it into today
Make the reflection tangible.
- Build the smallest informative experiment. Choose one idea and identify a modest test that could teach you something. Record the result, including evidence that complicates your original expectation.
- Name the contributors. List the people, tools, and earlier work your project depends on. Give appropriate credit and address one neglected practical need.
- Write a maintenance question. Before expanding a project, ask who will care for it six months from now. Include their time, resources, and preferences in the plan.
