01 · Context
Meet the story.
In Hindu traditions centered on the Ramayana, Hanuman is a devoted ally of Rama. He is known for extraordinary strength and his part in the struggle to recover Sita from Ravana. In a celebrated healing episode, he carries a mountain bearing medicinal herbs for the wounded. The Met’s Rajasthan painting shows the entire peak because he cannot confidently identify the needed plants. The story joins immense capability with an urgent commitment to another’s survival.
Ramayana stories traveled and developed across South and Southeast Asia. Cleveland’s bronze Flying Hanuman, made in Cambodia in the 900s, belongs to a Khmer artistic setting far from the later Rajasthan painting. Seeing them together reveals the variety of devotional and artistic traditions around the figure. Contemporary temple accounts also place Hanuman within active religious life. A museum object can illuminate that history, but it cannot represent every community’s interpretation or practice.

Our reflection begins by taking stock of what we can actually offer: time, transportation, a practical skill, patient attention, or access to a resource. Match the offer to a need the other person identifies. Capability becomes service when the recipient’s situation guides the effort and their dignity survives the help.
Meet uncertainty with care
Hanuman’s mountain episode gives us a memorable image of acting under uncertainty. In ordinary life, our response should include checking facts, asking someone with relevant expertise, and being candid about what we do not know. A willingness to learn can protect the person we hope to support from our confident mistakes.
Let devotion include follow-through
For Infinite Hand, commitment continues after the dramatic moment. Confirm that supplies arrived, that an introduction was useful, or that a promised visit still fits the person’s needs. Quiet maintenance matters. Sharing the work with others also allows care to last longer than one person’s burst of energy.
03 · A question to keep open
Leave room for complexity.
An ethical reflection should not reduce Hanuman to a motivational mascot or assume all Ramayana versions tell the same story. Devotion, sacred narrative, regional performance, and theology belong to his context. The healing imagery describes religious literature and art; it is not a promise that faith or heroic effort guarantees a medical outcome.

- Offer one specific resource you can share, and ask whether it matches what the person needs.
- Admit an uncertainty before acting on someone else’s behalf, then find an appropriate source of guidance.
