Learning humanity in public.
Data is the android Starfleet officer in Star Trek: The Next Generation. In The Measure of a Man, a hearing examines his right to refuse an experiment. Picard challenges an institution prepared to treat a colleague as property because of how he was created.
In The Offspring, Data creates Lal, recognizes her as his daughter, teaches her, and tries to protect her. Lal chooses her appearance and gender. These stories offer fictional ways to explore autonomy and learning. They do not settle questions about the capacities of present-day machines.
